Corpus Christi, TX - Part One
A VERY ROUGH START
Back in February of 2002, when the Lord showed me the map of the USA in a vision, there was a dot on the South Eastern coast of Texas near the Southern most part of the Gulf Shoreline. At that time, I didn't even know what city was located there. I had to go look at an atlas. Then I discovered it was Corpus Christi, Texas.
Diana and I made plans to fly to Texas on December 3, 2024. We bought our airline tickets and reserved the hotel in Corpus Christi. We also had to make arrangements for Ranger (our Great Pyrenees) and Sammy (our little Chi-Poo) to stay at the Mud Creek Kennel for a week. We took the dogs to the Kennel on the afternoon of December 2, checked them in, and took them to their shared Kennel. Hoping all was well, we went to bed very early that night since our plane was leaving the Fort Wayne, Indiana airport at 5:15am the next morning. The airport is about an hour from our home. Meaning we had to get up at 3am, to get loaded up, drive to the airport and arrive at there an hour early to get through the TSA Security.
When our alarm went off Diana noticed that the owner of the Kennel had left a text message the evening before. Sammy was having a "meltdown." She reported that he would not leave the kennel to go outside and do his business. He was huddled down in the corner of the kennel and was constantly crying and shaking. When she finally got him out of the kennel, he had an accident all the way down the hallway walking towards the door. Push pause on this story. You have to know that when we got Sammy he came to us from a Rescue Shelter. He had been born in a puppy mill and had been abused. He had a broken front right leg that had never been set properly. He had a rib protruding on his side where he apparently had been kicked. A local Sheriff's Department served papers on the owner of the puppy mill, closed it and took all the dogs away. Sammy was taken to a nearby Humane Shelter. He was a mess! He apparently had been neglected in his cage for a long time because his coat of hair was all matted with feces. He was angry at the whole world because the abuse he had experienced and only very little human interaction. The Humane Shelter had to give him drugs and put him out just to give him a bath and trim his long matted coat of hair. Back to the story. We were very distraught over the message that morning. We didn't know what to do. I sensed instantly that we were going through a spiritual test. I said, "No matter what happens, we are not going to loose our peace and our joy." We prayed and asked the Lord what we should do. We agreed that we could not leave Sammy at the kennel unless he had a better night. Diana texted the owner of the kennel, but since it was 3am there was no response. We did not know what do do, and the time for us to leave the for the airport had arrived. We decided that if we did not hear from the kennel by the time we got to the airport, Diana would have to stay home. We both had peace about this decision even though it meant cancelling her plane ticket and changing all our arrangements
When we arrived at the airport we still had not heard from the kennel. I got my luggage out of the car, kissed my beautiful wife goodbye, and entered the airport to go through security. Diana returned home and later that morning went to the kennel to get Sammy to take him back home. I was headed to Texas alone. Diana was staying home to take care of Sammy and Ranger. Today is Sammy's birthday! He is three years old today, has grown a lot, and has made some significant changes in his behavior. He still does not trust most humans and will usually try to defend himself by biting them. However, he has made friends with several of our neighbors and their dogs. His best friend and and Big Brother is Ranger. Even though Sammy had A VERY ROUGH START in life, he now has a wonderful life (literally spoiled rotten) and we intend that his journey through life will be much better than his start.
Jesus has used Sammy to teach us many things over the past few years: how to deal with complex trauma, how to love when your love is not accepted nor returned, compassion for damaged souls, patience in the face of difficult challenges, pray first and always hold onto your peace and joy no matter what life throws at you.
